Yesterday afternoon we hiked to the old fire lookout
on Elk Mountain. This is on the ridge between Snake River
and Little Greys River. The views were great, but it
is a little hazy from some Idaho forest fires. The Tetons,
including the Grand is in the distance, just to the left
of the lookout. We started at 3:00pm, so it was nearly
dark when we got back down to the truck.
Score
Miles hiked: 8
Three miles up and we added an extra
two coming down by taking a short-cut.
Vertical gain: 2400 feet
Trail: Steep, Real Steep.
Wildlife: 1 deer up near the top. Probably
next to the biggest deer we've ever seen.
1 moose in the trail on the way down.
Lessons learned: Probably not a good idea
to hike down a creek named Skull Creek
when it is getting dark.
Huckleberries: Yup, got to go back with a bucket.
